CMS and e-commerce
Umbraco as the platform for content and e-commerce, with prices, product ranges and terms and conditions tailored to each customer type.
Together with Skånska Stearinljusfabriken, we built an e-commerce solution that manages three completely different customer types on the same platform: private individuals, businesses and retailers. Each group is presented with its own pricing, product range and terms and conditions, linked in real time to the factory’s FileMaker business system.
The challenge
Skånska Stearinljusfabriken is a Royal Warrant holder and has been making candles in the traditional way since 1951. However, their customers are anything but uniform. A private individual buying a pack of candles, a business ordering on account, and a retailer with their own purchase prices all have completely different requirements in terms of price, product range and terms and conditions.
Solving this with three separate online shops would have meant three systems to manage and three places to keep synchronised with stock and orders. The challenge was to build a single solution that could support all three customer types, each with their own experience, without duplicating either work or data.

Results
Private individuals, businesses and retailers each have their own portal with separate pricing (including or excluding VAT and B2B prices), their own product range and their own terms and conditions of purchase, such as minimum order amounts and invoicing procedures.
Products, stock levels and prices are retrieved from FileMaker, and new orders are sent back into the system. The website and the business system remain synchronised without the need for manual duplication of effort.
Klarna Checkout (Kustom) offers a secure and familiar shopping experience, tailored to the specific needs of each customer type.
The platform has been in operation since 2017 and has processed over 10,000 orders. It has grown alongside the business rather than needing to be rebuilt.

The process
We designed the solution around a shared product catalogue and customer logic, where prices, product ranges and terms and conditions can be tailored to each customer type. Private individuals, businesses and resellers are provided with different experiences based on the same foundation.
We integrated the website with the factory’s business system in FileMaker. Product details, stock levels and prices are fed into the system, and orders placed are sent back, ensuring that the same data drives both the shop and the business.
We developed a login and customer management system that tailors both prices and terms of purchase to the individual customer, from VAT display to invoicing and minimum order amounts.
We integrated Klarna Checkout to provide a secure checkout process and, since its launch in 2017, have continued to manage and develop the solution in line with the growth of our business.
Technology
The solution combines a flexible CMS with deep integration with the business system and a modern checkout system. The result is an e-commerce platform that keeps the website, stock and orders in sync.
